Barbados is bang up in winning Hutcheson Stakes

Hallandale Beach, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – Odds-on favorite Barbados, ridden
by Luis Saez, battled through the stretch with the early leader and went on to
claim Saturday’s $150,000 Hutcheson Stakes for 3-year-olds at Gulfstream Park.

Trained by Mike Tomlinson, Barbados went off as the 7-10 favorite in the six-
horse field with the scratch of Mucho Macho Man Stakes champ Bluegrass Singer
to run in the card’s Holy Bull Stakes.

Barbados left from the outside post and pressed pacesetter X Y Jet, the 3-1
second choice, along with 7-2 third pick Dom the Bomb in the seven-furlong
stakes.

The favorite moved along side X Y Jet on the final turn and the two were even
entering the stretch. Barbados edged to the lead in mid-stretch and was able
to register a half-length victory over X Y Jet with Big Family getting third.

“Any good horse has heart and he showed us some heart today,” Tomlinson noted.

Richard the Great was fourth followed by Bridget’s Big Luvy and Dom the Bomb.
Stanford was also an early scratch.

The time for the Hutcheson was 1:24.39 on a fast track.

Owned by Paul and Suzanne Hanifl’s Suzanne Stables, Barbados notched his
second stakes win of the year having won the Spectacular Bid on Jan. 3 at
Gulfstream. The Hutcheson victory was worth $90,000 to put the colt’s career
earnings at $203,650.

Barbados began his career on the turf at Kentucky Downs with a second and a
fifth before winning on Keeneland’s newly installed dirt main track, listed as
sloppy, last October.

Barbados returned $3.40, $2.40 and $2.10. X Y Jet paid $3.40 and $2.80, and
Big Family paid $4.20 to show.
