Los Alamitos, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – Early Kentucky Derby favorite Dortmund
kept his perfect record intact with a photo finish win of Saturday’s $500,000
Los Alamitos Futurity.
Dortmund, trained by Bob Baffert for Kaleem Shah, was the 3-5 favorite versus
four other 2-year-olds in the 1 1/16-mile stakes, formerly the CashCall
Futurity at Hollywood Park.
Ridden by Martin Garcia, Dortmund stalked the pace that was set by 5-2 second
pick Mr. Z with 3-1 Firing Line in second. The three colts were on even terms
down the stretch and battled through the final furlong.
The top three horses hit the wire together with the victory to be decided by a
photo. Dortmund was credited with a head decision over Firing Line with Mr. Z
getting third. Bench Warrant finished fourth and No Problem fifth.
The time for the Futurity was 1:40.86 on a fast track.
Dortmund increased his earnings by $300,000 and posted his third victory in as
many starts. The chestnut colt has banked $359,400 as he recorded his first
stakes win.
A son of 2008 Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown, Dortmund was the 9-1 top choice
among the 2-year-olds listed in last month’s opening Kentucky Derby Future
Wager.
Dortmund paid $3.20, $2.40 and $2.10. Firing Line returned $3.40 and $2.10,
and Mr. Z paid $2.10 to show.
