Hallandale Beach, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – Sky Flight, ridden by Jose Lezcano,
made a successful move into stakes company by winning Saturday’s $75,000
Tropical Park Derby at Gulfstream Park.
Trained by Mark Casse for John Oxley, Sky Flight broke from the inside post as
the 9-2 third pick in the 12-horse field of 3-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles on
the turf. Smooth Daddy was the 5-2 favorite with Other Cheek the 3-1 second
A veteran of three prior starts, Sky Flight made it three wins in a row with
Saturday’s stakes victory. The colt didn’t start to run until the final turn
when Lezcano, aboard for the first time, moved his mount to the outside.
Sky Flight ran down pacesetter Cement Clement nearing the wire and was able to
post a length victory over the 25-1 longshot. Getting third was Smooth Daddy
with Cabo Cat fourth.
Completing the order finish were Daddy’s Kid, Best Plan Yet, Other Cheek, My
Storm Trooper, Morning Calm, Breitling Flyer and Roman Approval. Wallyanna was
pulled up on the backstretch. Bashart and Ironicus were scratched.
The time for the Tropical Park Derby was 1:40.25 on a firm turf course.
Sky Flight received his largest paycheck of $43,245, increasing his earnings
to $105,445 with three wins in four starts. Racing exclusively on grass, the
3-year-old was fifth in his debut race at Kentucky Downs followed by a pair of
wins at Keeneland and Churchill Downs, respectively.
Sky Flight returned $11.40, $7.60 and $4.80. Cement Clement paid $24.40 and
$13.80, and Smooth Daddy paid $3.40 to show.
